➡️One of my first exposures to demons was in a church in southern Ohio where I served for about 20 years.  I was leading worship and it was one those services where the Spirit of God seemed really close. I looked down into the crowd and there was a young man, right by the stage, a teenager, who was slithering on his belly through the crowd like a snake.  Obviously, I knew that wasn’t normal – and he did ended up having a demon – probably several.  Really, really weird – but study the scripture and demons caused people to do very strange things, including throwing themselves into the fire, foaming at the mouth, and even keeping people from speaking, seeing and hearing.

According to  C. S. Lewis: “There are two equal and opposite errors into which our race can fall about demons. One is to not believe that they exists. The other is to believe, and to feel an excessive and unhealthy interest in them.”  Demons are real – it’s in the Bible, but personally I do not give them much thought at all – instead, according to James 4:7, “I submit myself to God and resist the devil, and he runs away.”

I love C. S. Lewis, but what about the Bible.  If the Bible says it, I’ve decided to believe it. So what does the BIBLE SAY about demons?  Let’s find out by answering THREE questions – who are they, what do they do, and, one of the most asked questions when it comes to demons, can they possess or harm me?

1…WHO ARE THEY?  Where did they come from?  Why did God create them?  According to Revelation 12:9, the Bible says “The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.”  So, biblically, demons are fallen angels who, along with Satan, chose to rebel against God.  When God created Lucifer, he created him as good, full of beauty, he was a head angel; God did not create him as evil, rather the devil chose evil.  His name was Lucifer, but he became the devil, which simply means accuser.  We’ve all seen people raised in an amazing home, and yet through bad choices, they become evil. It’s the same with the devil and with demons – the details are not given in scripture, but demons were created by God as angels of righteousness – doing God’s will, but they were cast out of heaven with the devil because they chose evil.  The devil is their leader – but he is not equal to God, he is a created being – a fallen angel, just like them.  Demons would be equal to angels; however, according to Revelation 12:4, there are twice as many angels as demons.

2…WHAT DO THEY DO? Back to Revelation 12:9, they work with the devil to lead the whole world, that’s us, astray.  They do this by deceiving, harassing and possessing people.

They work in order, with the devil as their leader. Ephesians 6 says that we are in warfare with the devil and his demons – describing them as rulers, authorities, powers and spiritual forces.  This teaches us that demons have order – there are some demons that are stronger, or more important than others, meaning there are demons that lead and some that follow. This scripture also teaches us that they are powerful – calling them rulers, powers and forces.  In Mark 5, for example, there was a man possessed by a demon and chains or shackles could not hold him. In Acts 19, one man is possessed by a demon, and he ends up beating up seven brothers, who end up running out of the house, naked and bruised – and, I’m sure, very embarrassed.

According to 2 Corinthians 11:14-15, demons also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness.  Again, they are wanting to appear good, but they go against the word of God, turning our hearts away from Him.  If you are hearing voices, or having thoughts inside of your head, or even hearing voices out loud, and they go against the truth of God’s Word – it’s  demonic.  If you are attending a church, or maybe you hear a preacher that’s preaching something that goes against the Bible, it’s demonic.  Demons can appear righteous, like it’s the right thing to do, or maybe the right thing to believe, but if it goes against the Word of God, it’s demonic.

This is the reason we have to know the Word of God – it’s  absolutely true – not what we hear, think or believe.  Any idea, teaching or “truth” that goes against the Word of God, it’s demonic.

3…CAN THEY POSSESS OR HARM ME?  There are many scriptures that teaches that people can be possessed by a demon – or even multiple demons – including men, women and children.  According to Matthew 12:43-45, demons can live inside of people; they want to live inside of people.  Even if a demon is cast out of an individual they will always come back – seeking to dwell inside of that person again (meaning, to settle in); and when it comes back, the Bible says he brings friends who are more evil than he is (meaning, some demons are more evil than others). However, there is no scripture that says a Christian can be possessed by a demon, meaning to be completely controlled by a demon, or demons – BUT the Bible does say that Christians can partner with demons, or come into agreement with them (I Corinthians 10:19-22), we wrestle with demons (Ephesians 6:10-13), and we can be tormented and harassed by demons (2 Corinthians 12:7).

If this is true, WHAT DO I DO NOW?  First, like I stated earlier, submit yourself to God, resist the devil and his demons, and they must flee from you (James 4:7).  Second, surround yourself with Godly teaching, Godly community and Godly media. According to 1 Samuel 16, a demonic spirit was given to Saul by God, but when David played his harp, the demon would leave and Saul would find relief. It’s so important who you listen to and what you listen to – I challenge you to keep a guard on your eyes and ears.  Ask the question, would Jesus watch this – or would Jesus listen to this?  If the answer is no, turn it off.  Again, resists the devil and he must flee.

Finally, know that Satan and every demon of hell is subject to God.

According to Luke 4:36, we have authority and power over demons in the name of Jesus

Colossians 2:15 says that the forces of darkness are no match for the Lord.

Matthew 25:41, says that eventually we win, because the devil and every demon will be thrown into hell, which was prepared for them.

And I love Luke 10:18, that says that Satan fell like lightning – meaning when there’s a war between God and Satan, it’s over instantly.

It’s true for God, and in Jesus name, it’s true for us!  That’s in the Bible and the Bible is always right!
