FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I try a class before making a commitment? Definitely. Call our office to schedule an appointment.

After paying the registration fee, what if I decide to wait before taking my first lesson?  The registration fee will not be refunded and your time slot will be released. However, if you decide at a later time to begin lessons, we will hold your registration fee for up to six months.

What should I expect my first day? When you arrive, there is a comfortable waiting room, which includes a TV and space for your little ones to spread out.  When it is your class time, your instructor will come to the lobby area and greet you.  There may be some light paperwork for you to fill out, as well.  You are welcome to join your child for their first lesson — but that’s it.  All other lessons are closed; there are chairs at the doors of each room, where you can listen in.  The final three minutes of your child’s lesson, you are welcome to join them and discuss their assignment with their instructor.  ALWAYS REMEMBER, we will start on time and end on time!!

Can I pay my child’s tuition by check or cash, instead of an automatic withdrawal? We ONLY accept checks or cash if you wish to pay your tuition fee at the beginning of the semester.  If you decide to take advantage of our monthly payment plan, we require an automatic withdrawal.

What will we need for class? keyboard — book and lesson journal

guitar — guitar, pic, capo, book and lesson journal

drums — sticks and lesson journal

voice — music and lesson journal

How long is a typical class and how often do we meet?  A group class is usually one hour, while a private class is 30 minutes or an hour.  If you need to talk with the instructor, please do so during your time slot.  We meet weekly, except for specific holidays (listed on the Calendar Page).

Can I watch my child during their lesson?  Sorry, but no. All of our classes are closed to parents and friends. You can always listen at the door, as well as watch and listen through our Blink video app — but we want our performances to be live only at the recitals and special performances.

Can we sign up for more than one class?  Yes. We also offer a multiple class discount — $40 off the second class and $50 off the third class and beyond (per month).

Do you offer a multiple family discount?  Yes. It is the same as the multiple class discount — $40 off the second child and $50 off the third child and beyond.

What happens if we miss a class? Due to the many classes and lessons that are scheduled at Genesis, there is simply not enough time or space to easily schedule multiple missed classes.  However, it is up to your instructor to notify you if they have an open slot to make up a missed lesson; most of the time this is not a possibility.

What do we need to do if we need to withdraw before the end of the semester? Unlike many other programs, we do not make you sign a contract or agreement; however, we do ask for a 30-day notice if you decide to withdraw.  You WILL be charged if you fail to let your instructor know within 30 days. No money will be refunded at any time. To withdraw, you must fill out our withdrawal form here.

What if I’m late for class?  No matter what time you arrive for your class, we will still conclude your lesson on time. If you miss more than 50% of your class time, the class will automatically be cancelled. We are conscious and courteous of all of our students and parents.

What is your weather policy? We follow the Trussville City School System — if they close for school, we will close as well. We have an extra week scheduled at the end of the year for possible snow / storm days.

If we have to miss a class, do we still have to pay the entire month’s tuition?  Yes. The tuition is divided equally over the five month semester.  If we need to cancel a lesson on our end, we will make up that class or credit your account.

If we only have classes for part of the month (such as in December), will we be charged the full tuition? Yes.  As stated above, the tuition is divided equally over the semester.  Although December, for example, is only a two or three week month of classes, there are other months throughout the year that are five week months to make up for December. At the end of the semester, you will be charged for a total of 18 weeks.  However, if you choose our monthly payment plan, there is a small charge that equals two extra class fees per semester.

Do we have to participate in the Christmas Showcase or the Spring Recital? You don’t have to participate, but we STRONGLY recommend it. If you choose not to, or if you are out of town, you will not be required to pay the recital fee.

Policy for missed classes are as follows:

  • Students who will be late or will miss a lesson should contact Genesis Music as soon as possible.
  • Instructors are under no obligation to extend lessons that begin after the scheduled start time, or makeup lessons cancelled by the student.
  • Only lessons excused due to illness or death in the immediate family MAY be made up. There are no exceptions to this policy. Absences are not excused due to other extra curricular activities.
  • If an instructor will be unavailable for a lesson, the student will be notified as far in advance as possible, and lessons will be rescheduled at a mutually agreed upon time.
