➡️According to the Bible, God frequently communicated with people through dreams, like Joseph’s prophetic dreams in Genesis, and King Solomon‘s dream where he asks God for wisdom in I Kings 3.

God also spoke to others in dreams, like Abimelech in Genesis 20, Jacob in Genesis 28, Laban in Genesis 31, Pharoah, who wasn’t even a Christian, in Genesis 41. God also spoke to Nebuchadnezzar and Daniel throughout the book of Daniel.

In the New Testament, God spoke to Joseph in a dream in Matthew 1 and 2; he spoke to the Wiseman in a dream in Matthew 2, and he even spoke to Pilote‘s wife in Matthew chapter 27.

If God spoke to people through dreams all throughout the Bible, God can still speak through dreams today!!

I love to dream – not about the future, but the kind of dreams when I feel like God is speaking. Like stated above, it’s in the Bible and the Bible is absolutely true. If the Bible says it, I’ve chosen to believe it. So what does the Bible say about dreams?

  1.  DREAMS ARE A COMMON WAY FOR GOD TO SPEAK

In Genesis 37, God used a dream to tell Joseph about his future. In 1st Samuel 28:15, Saul was disturbed because he said that God was no longer answering him, either by prophets or by dreams.

Numbers 12:6 says, “Listen to my words: ‘when there is a Prophet among you, I, the Lord, reveal myself to them in visions, I speak to them in dreams”

It was understood that God spoke in many ways – one of them being through our dreams.

  1. DREAMS OFTEN HAVE SIGNIFICANT MEANING.

Dreams do not have to always be a mystery, or simply a result of something we ate.  In Daniel 1:17, the scripture says that Daniel could understand visions and dreams of all kinds. His understanding and interpretation played a significant role in the whole nation.

In the same way, Joseph had dreams that he clearly understood – and he held on to those dreams through years of suffering – he knew what God had said, because of what he said through his dreams.

  1. GOD USES DREAMS TO ENCOURAGE, TO WARN, OR TO DIRECT.

Look at the dreams that I mentioned at the beginning of this post and you will find how God used every dream as an encouragement, a warning, or to give some type of direction.  For example, all in the New Testament, God directed the wisemen to take a different route – God warned Pilates wife to speak to him about Jesus – God also encouraged Joseph to take Mary home as his wife.

God still speaks through our dreams.  So what’s next?  Here’s five quick things:

  1. Ask God for dreams. Before I lay down every night, as I pray, I ask God for prophetic dreams. I ask God to speak to me to encourage me, and to direct my steps through the dreams that I have.  I may not always dream, but I dream a lot. Personally, I can always tell if it’s a God dream because it seems like I dream in 3-D. When I wake up from a God dream, it’s like it actually happened.
  2. When God gives you a dream, write it down and ask him for an interpretation.  If I wake up from a dream in the middle of the night, I often get up right then and write it down. I feel like I need to steward what God has given me.  It may be nothing, but it may be a God word.
  3. If God gives you a dream about someone else, which we also find in the Bible, only share it if it is encouraging.  If any dream would discourage someone else, keep it to yourself and just pray.
  4. Make sure your dreams line up with the word of God. If I feel like God is giving direction in a dream, but it does not line up with the Word of God, that’s obviously not a God dream – it’s rather a dream of the enemy.
  5. Expect God to speak.  Remember Acts 2:17 – “In the last days, God WILL pour out his spirit on all people; our sons and daughters WILL prophesy, our young men WILL see visions, and our old men WILL dream dreams.”  Expect God to speak through prophecy, through visions, and through dreams. God is a perfect Father, and every father loves to share their heart with their children.  Expect it!

It’s in the Bible and the Bible is always right!
