➡️What is the big deal about Halloween? Should Christians celebrate – or should we completely stay away from this holiday? Does God really care if my kids dress up like a superhero and visit our neighbors? I don’t think so, there’s nothing evil about that. That’s not evil in September, so why is it evil in October?
I love the Bible – because I love truth! And the Bible is truth, it’s packed with truth – even about things like Halloween. Of course, the Bible never does say “do or do not celebrate Halloween”, but again it’s filled with spiritual principles surrounding October 31.

Before we look at some scripture, let’s look at the history of Halloween: it actually started out as the celebration of Samhain (soy-in) – this was a pagan holiday celebrating the end of the harvest season; it was also a recognition of death and the start of the darkest part of the year. Many people also believed that spirits roamed the earth at this time and that the spirits of ancestors returned home. Since they believed this, costumes were worn to keep the spirits from recognizing the living; also, bonfires were built and sacrifices were made to please these spirits and guarantee a good harvest for the next year. Is all of this true? Not sure, but most sources do go back to this teaching.
The name Halloween actually comes from the Catholic tradition, who declared that the evening before “All Saints Day”, would be called “All Hallows Eve” – which was later shortened to Halloween. I believe the reason they did this was to get the attention of people off of evil, like the belief of Samhain (soy-in) and focus their attention on good, like celebrating saints of the church. In the same way, churches today celebrate Harvest Festivals, or “trunk or treats”, to “sanctify” the day of Halloween. And personally, I think that’s a great idea – take something that’s evil and make it holy. That’s what God did for me.
Halloween does have a dark background, but can we cancel something simply because of it’s pagan history? It’s interesting if you study other holidays, like Valentines Day, or Mothers Day, for example – they also have pagan backgrounds – and yet these are very special days for many of us. HOWEVER, Halloween does seem to be different. According to Christians who were saved out of satanic backgrounds, Halloween is very sacred on the Satanic calendar. And even if you don’t believe this, any research will show that on October 31 crime is up, accidents are up, drunk driving is up, pranks are higher – things are different on Halloween. My daughter lives in a college town, and her university actually closes for a couple of days; if I was the president, I would do the same.
There’s the history, which is very interesting, but…what does the BIBLE SAY? Like I said earlier, it never does say “do not celebrate Halloween” – but according to…
Ephesians 5:11, it does say – Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them –
3 John 1:11 – Do not imitate evil, but rather imitate good.
I Thessalonians 5:22 – Abstain from every form of evil.
2 Timothy 1:7 – FOR GOD DID NOT GIVE US A SPIRIT OF FEAR (which is definitely a battlecry for Halloween) BUT OF POWER, OF LOVE, AND OF SELF-CONTROL.
Philippians 4:8 – FINALLY, BROTHERS, WHATEVER IS TRUE, HONORABLE, JUST, PURE, LOVELY, COMMENDABLE, IF ANYTHING IS EXCELLENT, OR ANYTHING WORTHY OF PRAISE, THINK ABOUT THESE THINGS.
Personally, I’m not going to dress up like a vampire; I’m not going to decorate my front yard like a graveyard; I’m not going to hang ghosts in my windows; I’m not going to watch scary movies and visit haunted houses; I’m not even going to put little spider candies on top of my cupcakes. WHY? That’s wrong every day of the year, not just October 31. That’s celebrating evil; and as a Christian, I will not do that.
HOWEVER, dressing up like a super hero and visiting my neighbors – I’m all in. Halloween, for Christians, should be one of our biggest outreaches of the year. The worst thing we can do is shut off our lights and be the boring house on the street. We should have the best candy, the creamiest hot chocolate, the biggest bonfire – we should be the happiest house on the street. WHY? Not because we celebrate darkness, but because we celebrate the one who rescued us from darkness…and we want everyone to see that light inside of us.
Colossians 3:17 says, “whatever you do (on October 31, and every other day of the year) do it ALL in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father.” That’s our BIBLE, and the Bible is always right.
