➡️When it comes to voting, we’ve got to ask the question – what does the Bible say?  Of course the Bible never says to “go and vote”, but it’s packed with spiritual principles that must be applied.

Here’s four questions and biblical answers about the principles surrounding voting:

  1.  DO I HAVE TO VOTE?  Yes!  Leviticus 5:1 – “if a person is called to testify about something they have seen or heard about, but does not speak up, they will be held responsible and punished for their sin.” — if I see evil, and there’s something I can do to help stop it, I’ve got to do it. In America, voting is “speaking up”. If I say nothing, and do nothing, I’m held responsible.   James 4:17 says. “if I know the good I ought to do and I don’t do it, I sin.”  Matthew 5 says that we are the salt of the earth – the light of the world.  Salt makes things better and light exposes darkness.  We have to do everything we can, and this includes voting, to make things better and expose darkness.  It’s part of our calling as a Christian.  We have to speak up.
  2. WHO SHOULD I VOTE FOR? 2 Chronicles 19 —  Jehoshaphat, a righteous king, stood with king Ahab, an evil king.  The prophet came to Jehoshaphat and said, “since you stood with the wicked, the wrath of God is against you.”  We do not have the choice to walk in that voting booth and check any box we want. Every person on the ballot is flawed, but we are not voting for a pastor or a spiritual leader, we are voting for policies – what do they stand for?  When they give speeches or interviews, what are they talking about?   What party stands closest to the truth of the Bible?  We have to stand with that party. Only Jesus would be the perfect candidate, and obviously Jesus is not on the ballot. So we’ve got to vote for the party that stands closest to the teaching of Jesus.  If we do not, we will be held responsible.
  3. WHAT WOULD JESUS DO?  In the 1990s, everyone wore the bracelet, “what would Jesus do”. It was a major trend. But it is true. We’ve got to ask that question. Galatians 2:20 says, “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live but Christ lives in me”.  If Jesus was staring at that ballot, who would he vote for? We’ve got to ask that question and choose, again, the party that stands closest to the teachings of Jesus.  ASK THE HOLY SPIRIT TO LEAD YOU – James 1 says, “if anyone lacks wisdom, simply ask God and he will give it without finding fault”.  We may find fault in each other, but God is wanting us to come to him, and he will in no way turn us away. He finds no-fault. He wants to help us in our time of need. Ask God for wisdom, and that wisdom will be given.
  4. HOW WOULD JESUS TREAT THE OTHER SIDE?  Don’t let this season be a time of division. Back to Matthew 5, if we’re only kind to those who agree with us, we are no better than unbelievers. We are called to be Jesus to all people and to all political parties – even that person or candidate on the other side of the aisle, that you can’t hardly even look at, much less love, they are created by God and God loves them and has a purpose for their life. Treat them like Jesus would treat them – love them like Jesus would love them.  Bless them. Pray for them – James 5 says, “the prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.”  True story –  there was a time when I had such a hard time watching a certain political leader on TV. I would get so angry with them, knowing that they stood for everything I didn’t  stand for.  However, one day I felt like God spoke to me, and he asked me the question, “is there anyone praying for ________?” Probably not. Can you imagine being a person that no one is praying for?  That’s horrible.  Pray for people – love people. Treat all people, friends and enemies, like Jesus!

When you’re walking into that booth, and it’s just you and Jesus – He will lead you and he will guide you. Trust him and lean in to the truths and principles of the Word of God – because the Bible is always right!
