➡️In Psalm 103, it says that God forgives all of my sins and heals all of my diseases. If this is true, then why are Christians still sick? I’m sure many of us, if not all of us, have prayed for healing, and yet it seems like God is often silent. I personally had a skin disease for 30 years – we prayed again and again, and again…and no healing. BUT when I was 30 years old, I was instantly healed. So, of course, my understanding of the scripture changed.

As I’ve gotten older, a lot about the Bible has changed for me. I love the Bible, because the Bible is TRUTH. If the Bible says it, I’ve decided to believe it. So, what does the BIBLE SAY about healing – or, more specifically, your question may be, “Why is God not healing me”?: If you’re asking God for healing, and seeing nothing, here’s FIVE questions to consider:
1…HAVE I ASKED GOD TO HEAL ME? I’ve heard Christians say, “if God wants to do it, he will.” That’s not the way it works – God wants a relationship with us. He enjoys us getting into the scripture and believing for what he said. Just like I enjoy my kids asking for my help, God enjoys me asking him – it’s called a relationship. Matthew 7:11, “If I know how to give good gifts to my kids, how much more will my Heavenly Father give good gifts to me if I ask him”. James 4:1 – “we do not have because we do not ask God”. Luke 18:1 says, “Then Jesus told his disciples a story to shaw them that they should always pray and not give up.” Here’s the story – there was this king, it actually says an evil king; and this lady in his kingdom kept coming to him and asking him for justice, over and over again. Eventually the king said, “I don’t fear God and I don’t care what people think; but please give that lady what she wants”. When we ask God for healing, or for anything, keep asking…and keep asking…and keep asking. That’s what Jesus taught us.
2…DO I BELIEVE THAT GOD WILL HEAL ME? I don’t mean this as a cut – or to say that you don’t have enough faith. This teaching is often abused – I recently heard about a pastor who said this about his wife at her funeral, “I’m so disappointed that my wife lacked the faith to be healed”. That’s horrible.
In Mark 9, there was a father who wanted Jesus to heal his son; Jesus said to the dad, “everything is possible for the one who believes.” And I love the dad’s response, “I do believe; help my unbelief”. I love his honesty! Jesus didn’t scold the dad – instead he healed his son. Back to Luke 18, “If I know how to give good gifts to my kids, how much more does God want to heal me.” Ask God to help you to believe that.
3…AM I SURROUNDED WITH PEOPLE WHO BELIEVE THAT GOD STILL HEALS? This was the game changer in my personal story. Proverbs 13:20 – “walk with the wise and become wise; surround yourself with fools, and suffer harm”. It matters who you hang around. For years I was around people who would always pray the same prayer, “God, if it’s your will, please heal”. And I never got healed…no-one did. But when I started hanging around people who believed that God could not only heal my disease, but he wanted to, that’s when I was healed. If you’re a part of a church that never sees God healing anyone, it might be time to set up an appointment with the pastor. Show me a church that talks about healing, believes in healing, prays for healing…and I’ll show you a church that sees healing.
4…IS THERE SIN IN MY LIFE THAT MIGHT BE KEEPING ME FROM BEING HEALED? In Joshua chapter 6, the Israelites have this huge victory in the battle of Jericho (remember the old song, “Joshua fought the battle of Jericho); but one chapter later, in chapter 7, the Israelites suffer defeat in the tiny town of Ai. When they asked God why they lost, God said, in Joshua 7:11-12, “Israel has sinned, and that is why they cannot stand against their enemies.” Ephesians 4:27 is an interesting scripture that says, “do not give the devil a foothold”. Imagine a bad guy comes to your front door, and you crack the door – just a little. What will happen? The bad guy will stick his foot in the door – and we just gave him a foothold. Open the door to the enemy just the size of a foot, and all kinds of critters can come in – including many sicknesses. Sickness isn’t always a result of sin, but it’s still a great question to ask.
5…This is the big question – because you might be saying, “I do believe, I’ve asked God, I’m surrounded with Godly people, my heart is pure – BUT??? Here’s question 5…AM I STILL WILLING TO WORSHIP GOD IF HE NEVER HEALS ME? Just like many of you, there are things that I’ve asked God for, things in his Word, but it seems like the heavens are silent. It doesn’t make sense, but just like Job, I’ve made a choice to say, “the Lord gives and the Lord takes away; blessed be the name of the Lord”. If I see nothing, and God does nothing, I’m still all in – I’m going to worship him, no matter what. In Daniel 3, we read the story of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego (Rack, Shack and Benny, for my Veggietale friends). They were commanded to bow down to the golden statue, or suffer the fiery furnace. Their response is so…right, found in verse 17-18, they said, “we know God will deliver us; but even if he doesn’t, we will still not bow down”
I do not worship God for what he does for me, I worship God for who he is. I’ve made a decision to lean into the Word of God – to pray for healing, to believe for healing – back to Psalm 103, “God heals all my diseases”. Don’t stop believing that, and don’t stop praying that – but if God does nothing, like Rack, Shack and Benny, personally, I’m still all in. I trust him – and I trust his Word – it’s the Bible, and the Bible is always right!
