➡️In 1977, there was a top country hit that has been sung, and dreamed about millions of times since then: “I’ve been working in this factory for now 15 years, all this time I watched my woman drowning in a pool of tears. And I’ve seen a lot of good folks die that had a lot of bills to pay. I’d give the shirt right off my back if I had the guts to say:  take this job and shove it”.  That song is so funny to me because it became the battle cry of cowards – it was something the employee wanted to say, but he never did say it. According to the song, they never did have the guts. I also thought it was so humorous that the singer of the song was Johnny Paycheck. Paycheck?

It’s strange how people will bash the very ones who pay their mortgages, put food on their tables, put gas in their cars and pay for luxuries many people in the world would love to enjoy.

That may be the view of many American workers – of course, not all of them – but when it comes to my job, does the Bible have anything to say…whether I’m an employee or an employer?

First, let’s look at Genesis 2:15, “The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it.”  Yes, work was GOD’S IDEA. Genesis 2 was before the fall; it’s not a part of the curse.  God knows working hard is good for me – any father knows a summer job is better for a teenager than a summer vacation. And all dads said, “Amen!”

So…what does the BIBLE SAY about my job?

1…As I work hard, God will EQUIP me.   In Exodus 31:3 , God filled them with “ability and intelligence, with knowledge and all craftsmanship, to devise artistic designs, to work in gold, silver, and bronze, in cutting stones for setting, and in carving wood, to work in every craft.”

According to I Corinthians 12:4-6, it’s God who empowers us in our gifts, our service, and our activities.

And according to 2 Peter 1:3, it’s “God who gives us everything we need for life and Godliness”. Yes, God wants us to be more like him…he also wants us to be better workers.

2…As I work hard, God will PROMOTE me. According to Proverbs 22:29, “Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will stand before kings; he will not stand before obscure men.”

Proverbs 10:4 says, “Lazy hands make a man poor, but diligent hands bring wealth.”

And according to Proverbs 21:5, “The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance, but everyone who is hasty comes only to poverty.”

Would you love to get a promotion at your job?  Ask God; do your best; work hard; and expect God to promote you before kings (and company bosses).

3…As I work hard, God will PROSPER me.  According to Deuteronomy 8:18, “You shall remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth”.

2 Corinthians 9:11 says, “God will make you rich in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion”.  God will make you what?  Poor?  Barely getting by?  Living paycheck to paycheck?  No, rich!  Why?  So we can be like him, generous on every occasion.

4…As I work hard, God RECEIVES THE GLORY. Colossians 3:17 says, “Whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”

And according to Colossians 3:23, “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.”

As Christians, we should be the first one to arrive and the last one to leave; we should have the most creative ideas, the best attitude, the biggest smile, and the most joy of anyone in the office.   Know that God has placed you there not to just survive another day, but to be salt and light to a world that is so desperate for the peace and presence of God that you carry.  Ask the question, how would Jesus act if he had my job?  Do that, and God will equip you, he will promote you, he will prosper you and he will receive the glory.

That’s in the Bible and the Bible is always right!
