➡️I was raised in the church so I’ve heard about “the blood” all of my life – there’s power in the blood, oh the blood of Jesus, nothing but the blood. But think about the non-Christian walking into our churches and we start talking about eating Jesus‘ flesh and drinking his blood, John 6:53-58 – that even sounds weird to me, and remember, like many of you, I was raised in the church.

So let’s find out what the Bible says about the blood of Jesus – and what’s the big deal about the blood – by answering these three questions: what is it? Why is it necessary? And what does it mean for me?
1…WHAT IS IT? Hebrews 9:22 says, “without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sin.” This takes us all the way back to the Garden of Eden, when God first created Adam and Eve. In this perfect situation, Adam and Eve decided to go against the request of God and they committed the very first sin. Because of that sin, God sacrificed an animal to make clothes to cover their nakedness. After that, we find Abel, their son, offering a sacrifice of animals to God in Genesis 4:4, and years later, Noah offered a sacrifice after getting off the ark, in Genesis 8:20-21.
In Leviticus 4:35 and 5:10, God required animal sacrifices to provide a temporary covering of sins and to foreshadow the perfect and complete sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross. It didn’t seem fair because the animals did nothing wrong – they were innocent, they died in place of the one performing the sacrifice. In the same way, Jesus did no wrong, he was sinless, but he died in our place (I Timothy 2:6). According to 1 Corinthians 5:21, “God made Jesus who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”
2…WHY IS IT NECESSARY? Back to Hebrews 9:22, without a sacrifice there’s no forgiveness. God is a God of justice – and we want that. A judge, for example, that would allow a murderer to go free is a cruel judge. In the same way, John 3:16 says, “God loved the world so much that he gave his only son.” When Jesus died on the cross, according to Hebrews 9:28, he paid my debt of sin – just like the murderer standing before the earthly judge, I stand before God a sinner. We all do! BUT NOW, because of the sacrifice of Jesus, according to Colossians 1:22, he presents me before God blameless.
The best picture of this in my opinion is the first Passover celebration, found in Exodus 12. God’s people were still living in Egypt, and God was in the process of getting them out. He sent several judgments on the Egyptians because of their disobedience, and the final judgement was the death angel who was sent to kill every firstborn son in every household. However, God told his people to sacrifice an animal and put its blood on their doorframes. If the blood was applied, the death angel would pass over their homes. It had NOTHING to do with the people inside the home – it was the blood. Were they perfect? No. Were they sinless? No. Were they in a good mood, bad mood, getting along, not getting along? It didn’t matter – because of the blood.
3…WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR ME? Romans 3:23 says, “All of us have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God”. We are all like the murderer standing before the judge – we have to pay the price for our sin. If we didn’t, God would not be a just God. But God knows we can’t pay that price, so he sent Jesus. Back to John 3:16, “God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only son. If we believe in him, (and what he did for us on the cross), we would not perish, but instead, we would have eternal life.”
Because of the blood, I am justified before God – Romans 5:9
Because of the blood, I am clean – I John 1:7
Because of the blood, I am forgiven – Ephesians 1:7
Because of the blood, I have power over the enemy – Revelation 12:11
Because of the blood, I am now close to God – Ephesians 3:13
And, in the words of the late Andre’ Crouch, “The blood still reaches to the highest mountain. It flows to the lowest valley. The blood that gives me strength from day to day, it will never, ever, ever lose its power!”
That’s all in the Bible – and the Bible is always right!
