➡️When most people think about the devil, they seem to have this image of a red creature/zombie/demon figure, little horns, extremely evil, extremely ugly, extremely scary.  Hollywood has painted the devil as the ruler of hell, sitting on a throne, with demons doing his bidding. They have him as God‘s equal – almost like Darth Vader versus Obi-Wan Kenobi.  If God and the devil ever did fight, we would all be sitting on the edges of our seats, hoping God would be the ultimate winner.  That’s hollywoods version of the devil – but none of that is in the Bible.

Here’s four truths about the devil, according to the Bible:

  1. He’s not ugly.  The Bible never does say he’s red, nor does he have little horns and a tail. He doesn’t carry a pitchfork.  According to Ezekiel 28 Satan was the seal of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.  It goes on to say that every stone adorned him.  The devil was created as Lucifer, an angel in Heaven – he became the devil, which is one of his titles, or descriptions – it means accuser.  After he rebelled, he was thrown to the earth – but he was still a beautiful creation of God.  How many people have you met who were beautiful on the outside, but inside, they were devils?
  2. He’s not scary.  According 2 Corinthians 11:14, “Satan disguises himself as an angel of light”.  When Satan first appeared in the garden in Genesis 3:1, it says that he was cunning, like a smooth, charismatic personality.  The Bible never does say that Eve was frightened, or taken back at all because a scary snake was talking to her.  Don’t be deceived thinking our enemy will appear scary – he never does.  He is evil, definitely; eventually he is very scary – but at first he is always disguised as light, as truth, as the right thing to do.
  3. He doesn’t live in Hell.  According to Revelation 20:10, Satan and his demons will eventually be thrown into Hell – but according to 1 Peter 5:8, “our adversary, the devil, is walking around like a roaring lion, seeking people to devour.”  In Job 1:7, God asked Satan where had he come from – and Satan answered, “from roaming throughout the earth, going back and forth on it”.  Again, Hollywood has painted Satan as ruling and reigning in Hell – however, Hell is not Satans kingdom, it’s his prison – his final destination.
  4. He’s not God’s equal.  According to Genesis 1:1, God was in the beginning, and he created – the heavens, the earth, the angels, the devil.  Satan is a created being.  Between God and the devil, there is no contest.  According to Luke 10:18, when Satan was thrown out of Heaven, he fell like lightning – it was instant.  God verses Satan is not like Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker, the dark side verses the force – it’s like you and me verses an ant.  The ant can bite, and he can irritate.  The ant can slowly steal my food, and get his little ant cousins to mess up my lawn.  But with one slight move of my foot, the ant is no more. There is no fight.  The devil is a created being – created by God, who sees all, knows all, is in all, and according to Psalm 57:2, he’s over all – you, me, the whole world – and the devil.

That’s in the Bible, and the Bible is always right!
