➡️I did a little research on the internet, asking the question, “What is a real man”?  The answers varied from the Terminator / Rocky image, to someone who can express their feelings, a good listener and a man who is open minded.  Growing up, personally, I wanted to be the Terminator – and definitely  Rocky – they were great fighters, they had huge muscles, and they always won.

However, God may not call a man like Rocky a real man. When David was chosen to be king, for example, God told the prophet Samuel, in I Samuel 16:7, “Men look at the outward appearance (like muscles, strength, looks, wealth), but I look at the heart”.  So, according to the Bible, all taken from the life of David, what is a real man?  Here’s five things:

  1. 💪A real man honors God above men – The reason David was appointed King in the first place was because Saul knew the Word of the Lord, but he did not obey it.  Saul was given a simple command to destroy all, but he chose the approval of man over God and disobeyed (I Samuel 15:22).  I will die one day, and I will not stand before my family, my coworkers or my friends.  I will stand before God –  and hear him say, “Well done, good and servant”.
  2. 💪A real man serves others, even when they don’t deserve it – King Saul hated David, falsely accused David and even tried to kill David, again and again, but David still chose to serve the king.  Even when he had the chance to kill King Saul, in I Samuel 24, he chose to honor him.  Jesus said in Matthew 20:26, “Whoever among you wants to be great, must become the servant of all”.  Always remember, the most important person in any relationship is always the other person. Real men serve.
  3. 💪A real man knows how to fight, when to fight and who to fight.  Back to David, he didn’t fight his dad who didn’t choose him, he didn’t fight his brothers who made fun of him, he didn’t fight King Saul, who was hunting him down. He fought Goliath.  David knew his enemy – it wasn’t the people around him. Just like David, our warfare isn’t against flesh and blood, according to Ephesians 6:12.  Our warfare isn’t with people, its the demons of hell working through things like injustice, abuse, rejection, hatred.
  4. 💪A real man is respected by others – because David stood up to the enemy when no one else would, he won the respect of the people. Because he took the high road when he could’ve killed King Saul, he won the respect of the people. Because he led well, with a heart after God, he won the respect of the people. I had a leader tell me one time, “everyone loves you, but no one respects you”.  Ouch! It hurt, but I will never forget that statement. I’m not called to be loved, I’m called to do what is right. That wins the respect of the people.
  5. 💪A real man finishes well – King David wasn’t perfect, he made some horrible decisions in his life, but he was still known as a man after God‘s heart. He finished well.  All of us can share horror stories, how men of God that we loved and respected died in shame and disgrace. Back to the Bible, examples like Solomon who was wise, Samson who was anointed, Judas who was chosen – but none of them finished well.  We’re not perfect. We’ve all made horrible decisions in our lives. But, as for me and my house, we will finish well. Make that decision with me.

Listen to 1 Corinthians 16:13-14, it says, “Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, ACT LIKE MEN, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love.”

That’s a real man.  It’s in the Bible, and the Bible is always right!
