➡️The prosperity gospel is a controversial belief among many charismatic Christians that financial blessing and physical well-being are always the will of God for them. It is also known as the health and wealth gospel, or maybe the word of faith movement, and it is very Biblical – peoples interpretations may be off, but it is in the Bible.

Here’s a few:

“God will make you rich in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion” – 2 Corinthians 9:11

“The blessing of the Lord brings wealth, without painful toil for it” – Proverbs 10:22

“Dear friend, I wish above all things that you may prosper and be in health, just as your soul prospers” – 3 John 1:2

What do these scriptures mean – does God want me driving a Mercedes and living in a mansion?  Does God mind if I take lavish vacations with my family?  How about cloths – only name brands?  Styles – only the latest?  Restaurants – only steak, never cheese burgers?

The danger with the prosperity gospel is it is in the Bible – God wants me to prosper.  However, teachers of prosperity seem to paint this picture of mansions, fancy restaurants, and very expensive clothes.  I’m not sure if that’s in the Bible – so what is?  Here’s four things:

1…God wants to bless me.  God is a perfect father – and every father wants to bless their children.  Matthew 7:11 says, “If you then, though you are evil know how to give good gifts to your children how much more will your father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him.”  James 1:17 says that “every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from our Father”.

2…God knows what’s best.  Psalm 23:1 says, “The Lord is my shepherd”.  There are times when the shepherd pets the sheep and calls them by name; and there are times when the shepherd takes his rod and pops the sheep on his head to keep him from falling into the ditch.  In the same way,  God may give me a Mercedes;  but I also have to trust God, and he may know that driving a Mercedes is like falling into a ditch – it may not be the best thing for me, so he gives me a Chevy.  God knows what’s best.

3…God has a purpose for my blessings.  According to 2 Corinthians 9:11, “God will make me rich in every way so that I can be generous on every occasion, and through my generosity it will result in thanksgiving to God”.

God doesn’t care if I drive a Mercedes or if my family takes a nice vacation, but that’s not the purpose of his blessings. God will make me rich in every way, so that I can be generous on every occasion.  Generous it’s is the why behind my blessing.

4…God is sovereign – he’s Lord.  Daniel 4:35 says that “God does what he pleases – no one can hold back his hand or say to him: ‘What have you done?’”  I pray huge prayers, I bring to God very specific requests – I approach him as my Father, but I still call him Lord.

However, on the authority of the Word of God, I believe in Biblical prosperity – every spiritual patriarch in the Old Testament was very wealthy – and even Jesus had a treasure.   He wasn’t poor.  Just like Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph and Jesus, I believe God will bless me, he will heal all my diseases, he will make me rich in every way – but I also know that He will do what he pleases, and I choose to trust him to always do what is good.  Nahum 1:7 says, “The Lord is good, and he is a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in him”.   That word “cares” in the original language is the word “yada”, which means God knows us, he loves us, he sees us, he understands us…he cares for us.

That’s so good – it’s in the Bible – and the Bible is ALWAYS RIGHT!
