Whether you’re a beginner searching for your first instrument, a student needing a reliable practice tool, or a seasoned professional seeking the perfect sound for the stage or studio, the choices for a new piano/keyboard can be overwhelming. This review aims to navigate that landscape, exploring the key features, advantages, and drawbacks of a variety of keyboards to help you find the ideal match for your musical journey.

This review is not for the professional, but rather for the parent who’s sending their child to weekly lessons; all keyboards are ranging from $100-$1000, “BEGINNER” to “PRO”; and all instruments can be purchased on AMAZON (links and prices are provided). This review is also from the perspective of an owner of a music school, playing for over 50 years and teaching for 25 years – and a parent, who wants the best buy for their buck.

Here’s our TOP FOUR PICS:

BEGINNER – The VEITOB 88 Key Digital Piano, Electronic Keyboard Piano with Music Stand, Power Supply, Sustain Pedal, Stand, Bluetooth, MIDI

Beginner VEITOB

Price: $115
Amazon Link: https://amzn.to/3JNgR8E

This keyboard is extremely basic, and yet it includes all the items needed to get started in your musical journey – the stand, pedal, bluetooth capability and the power supply. Great for kids, but also fine for adults wanting to learn. It has 200 different tones, as well as 200 rhythms (drum beats to play along with). This keyboard is definitely one of the best values we could find for the price — all this for only $115? Great deal!

BEGINNER / INTERMEDIATE – The DONNER Digital Piano with 88 Key Velocity-Sensitive Keyboard, Record, Bluetooth, Chord, Bundle With Piano Stand, Piano Stickers, Sustain Pedal, Retro Wood Color

Beginner/Intermediate Donner

Price: $219
Amazon Link: https://amzn.to/4622Igy

This keyboard does not some of the “bells and whistles” like the cheaper brands, but it is definitely a better keyboard – sounds and feels more like a real piano (which is so important). It offers 128 tones, 100 rhythms, chord accompaniment – as well as a split mode capability, which is perfect when trying to work with your child, or for playing with other partners. One of its best features is its looks – the more expensive wood tone is really nice!

INTERMEDIATE – The ALESIS 88 Key Digital Piano with Full Size Graded Hammer Action Weighted Keys, Multi-Sampled Sounds, Speakers, FX and 256 Polyphony

Intermediate Alesis

Price: $439
Amazon Link: https://amzn.to/4mMG4Pz

The Alesis brand is a “real” brand – meaning it’s been around for years, and you can purchase this brand at any music store – unlike some of the cheaper brands. It’s difficult for some players to play on a keyboard, then have to play on an acoustic piano (a real piano), because it feels so different – the Alesis takes care of this with its action weighted keys – meaning it feels like a real piano. This is the keyboard we use in our personal studio. It only has 30 different tones, and no rhythms – it is used more as a piano, instead of a workstation. Like the Donner brand, it also has the Lesson feature, for multiple players – as well as record capability.

PROFESSIONAL – The Roland FP-30X 88-Key Digital Piano – Black Bundle with KSC-70 Stand, KPD-70 Three Pedal Unit, Bench, Online Lessons, Austin Bazaar Instructional DVD, and Polishing Cloth

PRO Roland

Price: $969
Amazon Link: https://amzn.to/41P0A9u

Roland, like the Alesis brand, is the real deal – this brand has been around for years, proving they know what they’re doing. This keyboard plays like a real piano, and it looks like a real piano – this would more for the main room, instead of the bedroom. It offers 35 tones, 8 rhythms, and a metronome (it keeps a beat). It does not have some of the features of the cheaper brands, but it definitely makes up for it in its style and its sound. Great piano for the child/adult who’s serious about their musical journey.
